Charles B. Gilman Charles Byron Gilman, a longtime Newberg High School teacher, died Dec. 27, 2008, in McMinnville. He was 89. He was born Sept. 22, 1919, in Schenectady, N.Y. to Charles and Bridget (Byron) Gilman. He graduated from Keveney Academy and Catholic Central High School in Cohoes, N.Y. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from Albany State College in New York, where he began work for his doctorate. He served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II, and was discharged with the rank of sergeant in 1946. Following his service, he took teaching positions in Hoosick Falls and Berlin, N.Y. He married Ruth Lee Currie on March 29, 1948. In the summer of 1949, the couple moved to Oregon, settling in Newberg. He took a teaching position at Newberg Union High School (now Newberg High School) in 1949 and taught English and history there until he retired in 1981. He enjoyed reading, model railroading, bird watching, fishing and tying flies. The couple continued to live in Newberg until 1995, when they moved to Carlton. Survivors include: wife Ruth of McMinnville; daughters, Maggie Dressel of McMinnville and Helen Gilman of Portland; one grandson and two great-granddaughters. No public services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to the Newberg Public Library or Legacy Hospice in McMinnville.
