Wayne Stanley
1940 - July, 2024
"I had borrowed Roger’s ‘39 Chevy, and for reasons I can’t recall, drove our two boy cheerleaders, Wayne and Bradley, to a Basketball Jamboree in Forest Grove. It was a dark, winter night on a gravel road, in the middle of nowhere and absolutely pouring rain, when, oh my gosh, we had a flat tire! They were looking forward to appearing before the large crowd while representing our school. By the time they changed the flat, both were mud spattered, soaking wet and not looking good! Wayne was always such a good natured & friendly guy, even that horrible night! He will be missed."
Alice K Williamson Renne
PS: In recalling this story, it occurred to me that we were given so much freedom then, and usually made pretty good decisions without parental input. I am pretty sure none of the folks knew of our plan. When I see kids today, am very happy and feel privileged to have grown up when, and like we did.
I remember his constant smile and his cackly laugh. He will be missed at our reunions! ~ Roger Renne

I wanted to make a comment about Bill Meyers. I have always liked him a lot and he was a great friend of Cal's (Holton). They used to ride horses with Larry Payne and Gary Wohlgemuth out above Wilsonville Road. What a special gift to ride several properties and make like cowboys! Cal moved to Newbderg as a Sophomore so those relationships meant a lot to him. . . Mary Johnston Holton Meyers

" . . . I first met Wilmer when we were in grade school as he lived across the street from my sister, Lucille. He worked to help his mom with expenses and grew up in a strong Christian home. I saw him off and on over the years. One Sunday I felt a hand on my shoulder and turned around to see his smiling face. I seldom saw Wilmer without a smile. He was always at our class gatherings - one of those people that liked everyone and everyone liked him. . .Dick Hays

"When we were in the first grade my mom was running the store at Ray’s hop yard in St.Paul, some one drove Linda and Me back and forth to Central Grade School in Newberg. Then She and I would hangout and play at the hop yard til my mom got off work. We had great fun and my mom would give us both a huge ice cream cone every day. Linda would never see me without telling me how much She loved my mom and how beautiful my mom was. Linda was one of my oldest and most loyal friends . I will miss her and miss talking about the good old days." ~ Bill Dressel
"I'm so sorry to hear about Linda's passing. She was always such a positive person and full of joy. I remember when we were in high school her father who was a custodian for the schools passed away. That was a very hard thing for her and the family. Bonnie her mother became a hair dresser and set up a shop. Linda was so faithful to attend all the reunions and will be missed.
She really put her energy into being a part of the class of ‘58. She went to EVERYTHING!! And never missed you if you were there. Yes, it’s like her family was part of our class too."
~ Marilyn Richey Crover
"I remember Linda all through our school years and after, as always smiling and a friend to all. She was the best hitter when we played softball and could hit further than any of the other girls. It will be sad not seeing her at the Golden Gathering and beyond, RIP, dear Linda." ~ Alice Kaye and Roger Renne

I have many great memories of John and AnnaMae, and Cal really enjoyed John a lot too. He was a great conversationalist and a good surveyor! John and AnnaMae demonstrated how to live joyfully together and meet life's challenges. April 1939 - June 29, 2019
Sad news from our Newberg fire family this evening. Here's a press release from TVF&R regarding the passing of retired Chief Al Blodgett. On behalf of NDPD, we salute your service to our city Chief.
News Release
"Retired Fire Chief Al Blodgett Passes Away After Half a Century of Service with Newberg Fire Department.
Earlier this evening, June 29, 2019, retired Fire Chief Al Blodgett passed away. Chief Blodgett was a true “lifer,” serving more than half of his life with the Newberg Fire Department.
Since the moment he arrived in 1946, Newberg was always home to Chief Blodgett. Graduating from Newberg High School in 1958, Al’s heart for service led him to join the Newberg Fire Department as a volunteer in 1960.
Chief Blodgett balanced a volunteer firefighting schedule with owning and operating Al’s Family Diner until 1984, when he became a full-time paid firefighter with the department. Chief Blodgett worked through the ranks of the department, winning several awards for service and leadership, eventually being sworn in as Fire Chief in 2006. Upon his retirement, Chief Blodgett served 50 years with the Newberg Fire Department.
Community always came first for Chief Blodgett. When not responding to emergency calls, he could be found flipping pancakes, wrapping presents for children or hanging Christmas lights around town. If there was an event in Newberg that brought the community together, chances were high that he attended it, helped support it or planned it.
Our thoughts are with his family and the many firefighters that served alongside him. A time and date for his service will be forthcoming."
"Al Blodgett started working for Ted Francis when we were in 6th or 7th grade, changing the marquees at the Cameo and the Francis Theaters. Later, when I was working there selling popcorn, or selling tickets, Al usually worked the projection room. He had been in my Grandmother’s Sunday School class for many years, so when I would be in Newberg and went to Sunday School, I would see Al. I remember him as very kind and always working. He knew everybody and cared about everybody. And he knew how to fix the Soda machine at the Cameo." ~ Diana Rickert Waggoner

His mom always had something nice to say when one came to bat. She had her own book, and kept all the statistics. I remember one game I kept hitting fly balls to right field, and they were all caught. And I would come back hanging my head. She would be all similes because I had got an RBI ...... Ron had been on 3rd base. ""Ron fought hard and always seemed in good spirits. He will be missed by not only our class but all who knew him. "The last conversation I had with him was at our 35th reunion and we enjoyed a good time. Our relationship went back to our grade school years when I went to Ladd Hill and he to Chehalem Center. We played ball against them every year and then had a field day of all the rural Grade schools at the end of the year. We laughed about those times." ~ Dick Hays

| Donna Ann Cloepfil Moore October 28, 1940 - August 26, 2015
Growing up with Donna was a joy and a privilege. The earlier part of her working days was spent in being a hair dresser and owning and operating a Beauty School. Switching careers, she then worked with Adec where she had a solid base of good friends who were touched by her kindness and joy. But we knew her before all that. Donna was a part of all of us.
Diana writes: "Donna was a special friend to everyone; she had such patience for those who needed her."
and this from Roger " I have fond memories of walking out to Cloepfil's house on Dayton Avenue with Donna and Doug when I was about 11 years old, having dinner with a houseful of Cloepfil kids.
Mary Phillips Schmidt sums it up for all of us: "May Donna rest in peace."

After visiting with many classmates about Hal, it is discovered that he was thought of as "best" friend by almost all of us. His obituary is posted on his personal page but it doesn't mention the kindnesses he passed on as he went about his life, the many visits he made to those who needed help or just a friendly face. From driving up to The Dalles to visit with Larry Hubbell or going elk hunting with Gary Whitmore in John Day to driving a neighbor to the doctor. Hal was always just "showing up" when a helping hand was needed.

| Kay Mace Church December 3, 1940 - September 20, 2014
Kay lived out her life right here in Newberg. Following high school graduation she became a beautician and she never retired. She was a favorite of all the "older" ladies who still wanted their hair curled up on rollers and dried under the dryer. She seldom missed any of our class gatherings and often she and Linda Farr Osborne came as each other's "date." A source for finding some of our "lost" classmates, her info and connections will be missed.
A note from Alice Everest reminds us that she and Kay went to school together every year beginning with first grade.
"Kay Mace was always very special in my heart. She was so kind, and so concerned about Everybody. She was a peace-maker and a loving heart. She lived across the street from my cousin’s Grandma, so I first remember meeting Kay when we were maybe 3 or 4 years old. We were in Mrs. Church’s sewing class in 8th grade; fortunately Kay was in class with me, or I would probably still be sitting there trying to get the apron pocket straight on my sewing project. Kay finally …..after about the 3rdtime she’d ‘fixed’ something for me on that apron….told me that if I’d quit talking so much I could probably get the sewing project finished. When we got to Mrs. Sperry’s Homemaking Class our freshman year, Kay absolutely refused to be in the same class with me. Been There, Done That, and apparently one semester was all Kay wanted to endure of my sewing skills." ~ Diana Rickert Waggoner

Naida V. Burgoyne Corder
1939 - 2006
Naida lived and worked in the Newberg area. Many of us contribute our "getting well" to Naida going to bat for us when we were ill. She was a dedicated RN.
Naida Burgoyne was one who Loved going to Maxine’s (Kuhne) too. Naida used to always make us laugh with her commentary on our equestrian skills. Maxine was Awesome, and Naida was Pretty Good as a horseback rider. Another funny memory of Naida; one day I was at Naida’s house and we walked thru a cherry orchard near her folks place…and because we were tired from our long walk, we sat under a cherry tree and were chattering away, when we decided we were hungry, so picked and ate some of the cherries. They were pretty good, so we ate more cherries. Those tasted even better, so we ate a few more. We were still sitting there chattering when I absent-mindedly broke open a cherry…then another…and another…each cherry had a worm inside!!! Being Nursing Minded, Naida marched us back to her house and we each drank 2 Cokes…she assured me Coke would kill ANYTHING! She reminded me of the time in Mrs. George’s biology class when we dropped worms in Coke and watched the worms die!!! Neither Naida or I suffered any ill effects from either the worms, cherries or the Cokes, so I guess it was ok. ~ Diana Rickert Waggoner

Bob Dent
1939 - 2006
After graduating college, Bob spent most of his adult life in St. Helens. There are many photos and an obituary to be found by clicking on the image to your right. He passed away while serving on the 50th Reunion Committee and, though many of his ideas were used, he was not here to share the grand event with us.
"Bob Dent was another who was a friend from early days. Bob was about 2 when he was adopted, and I was just past my 1st Birthday. My family stopped at Dent’s to meet Bobby when he had been with them less than a week, so he and I were apparently sitting on the floor sharing toys. But it was just a few days later Bob broke out with measles and was very sick…so the measles were truly the first gift I ever received from Bob! Later, I was teaching PE in St. Helens, and they needed a Junior High Science teacher, so I called Bob to let him know, and we both taught at St. Helens the next year. We thought it was pretty funny to be acting as chaperones together at the Junior High dances!" ~ Diana Rickert Waggoner

I loved it, and from then on, was hooked. After teaching in OR for 2 years I moved to Denver, to indulge my love for skiing, and would always think of Ellen and her beautiful, joyful smile as I finally reached the end of a difficult ski run. 1940 - 1996
As a child, Carolyn lived on Portland Road with her parents and older sister. She seemed to always be one of the "smartest" kids in our class, whichever class it was. As an adult she achieved her CPA and worked as an accountant in Jackson County, Oregon.
"Carolyn Baron was another who loved horses; we lived 2 houses apart on Portland Road….and I always knew when an Audie Murphy movie would come, Carolyn would be one of the first in line at the box office. I always hoped that someday she would have her own horses, but I don’t know if she did. Once she entered Heaven, I think Our Lord probably had Audie Murphy meet her at the Gate with a couple of horses and they are still riding! Carolyn got me thru Freshman Algebra; I never did quite get the hang of that, but she was very patient with helping me. I’d probably still be trying to finish my assignments if Carolyn hadn’t helped me! Carolyn and I were friends before we started school just because we lived so close and were in the same Sunday School class when I was in Newberg." ~ Diana Rickert Waggoner

Maxine Kuehne Wagner
1940 - 1978
Maxine was the first (and maybe the only) girl in our class to have her own car. We do not have an obituary for Maxine
I was re-reading some of the histories, and I do remember Maxine Kuehne was one of the first of us to be married after graduation. During our Senior Year, Maxine had developed Brucellosis, or Undulant Fever as it was called then. It left her with a weakened heart, and I believe it was heart disease that took her life. Maxine was a lover of horses, and was an excellent rider. Four or five of us used to visit her periodically on Saturdays and would ride for hours. She was the only one really proficient, and I think the rest of us simply wearied the horses with our incompetence, AND we were teen-age girls, so we talked all the time. Poor horses.
Maxine married Glen Wagner, who was with the Oregon State Patrol. They lived on an acreage near Salem last I saw her, and I believe they had 2 sons. ~ Diana Rickert Waggonwr
