After my first wife, Angela Batchelder, passed away in 1974, I married one of my former students, Lynette Hehn, who now serves as a graduate education professor at Northwest Nazarene University. After marrying in 1976 at First Church of the Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho, where we have since resided, we had two sons: Brandon, 28, Kansas City, and Tyler, 26, Seattle.
Following a three-year stint teaching English at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, I transferred to Northwest Nazarene University in 1969, where I have served on the faculty for 39 years. I am preparing to retire from full-time teaching in May of this year.
Pastimes: I enjoy playing racquetball and pinochle as well as teaching Classic Cinema and Shakespeare online!
Travels: Taking students to London and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival to study Shakespeare every few years has certainly highlighted my teaching. I also relish visiting my sister Sara Grant and dad in Newberg and another sister Marilyn Pruitt in Tigard.
Memories: I especially appreciated a very encouraging English teacher during our senior year at Newberg High School. I also relished singing in the school choir and getting turned on to both Shakespeare and movies during our junior year when, on a class field trip, we marched down to Francis Theater to watch Marlon Brandon’s Julius Caesar, the first movie in a theater I had ever seen!
