Helen J. Goldstein, 91, a resident of the Forest Grove community, died Sunday, May 1, 2016 at the Brookdale Assisted Living Facility in Forest Grove.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at Brookdale Retirement Center, 3110 19th Avenue in Forest Grove.
HELEN JANE GOLDSTEIN was born on June 16, 1924 in Burlington, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late George Whitfield Sr. and Doris Helen (Voss) Johnston. The family moved to Oregon in 1930 and she was raised and received her education in the Forest Grove community, and was a graduate with the Forest Grove High School Class of 1942. Upon her graduation, she attended Pacific University graduating in 1946 with a Bachelor’s Degree and 1953 with a Master’s Degree both in Education. She then attended the University of Washington where she received her Master’s Degree in Library Science.
She was united in marriage to Milton Goldstein on December 28, 1962 in Silver Spring Maryland. Following their marriage they made their home in the communities of Newberg, and later King City until 2008 when she moved back to the Forest Grove community, where she had resided since.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Milton on January 27, 1991 after celebrating over 29 years of marriage together.
She worked as a teacher in the Newberg School District. She took a leave of absence from Newberg to teach in Panama for two years and later returned and became the head librarian for Newberg School District until her retirement.
Helen was a member of the PEO Chapter L.
Among her special interests she enjoyed traveling, reading and gardening. She loved cats and was always happy when she was visiting family and friends and the household cat would come and curl up in her lap.
Helen was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother George (Bud) Johnston.
Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law Richard W. and Lois Johnston of Forest Grove, OR; sister-in-law Margaret Johnston of Hillsboro, OR; nephew Geoff Johnston (Alisa), nieces Carol Johnston, Kathy Bahnsen (Jeff), Diane Jackson, Janet McKinnon (Gary) and Andrea Meeuwsen (Rob); great nephews and nieces Megan Johnston Nickelson, Lindsay Crowell, Stephanie Johnston Frantz, Krissey Bahnsen, McKenzie Johnston Carrey, Alex Johnston, Zane Meeuwsen, Henry Meeuwsen, Jarius Jackson and Dejia Jackson; great great nieces and nephews Maddox and Lincoln Crowell, Sydney and Simon Frantz, Noah and Lucas Nickelson and Georgia and Matilda Carey.
